Monday, with gusts 40-55 mph. Gusts 30-45 mph will be common

.UPDATE...

The shortwave trough that will bring windy conditions back to the
region tonight into Monday has entered western Montana per
satellite imagery. While gusty gap winds are already occurring
around Livingston to Nye with gusts in the 40s (mph), look for
winds to increase across the foothills west of Billings over the
next few hours ahead of the late night, early morning cold front
passage. Winds look to peak over the western foothills with the
passage of the cold front. Over the plains, occasional gusty winds
may occur overnight, especially over the higher hills, but the
main winds look to hold off until closer to sunrise when the
inversion breaks and winds mix down. As far as forecast peak wind
gusts go, little has changed this evening. Gusts of 30 to 45 mph
still look common over the plains with 40 to 55 mph over the
foothills west of Billings. As for 60 mph wind gusts, chances
remain moderate around Livingston to Nye and Big Timber to
Harlowton. If 60 mph wind gusts do occur, they will likely be
short-lived with the passage of the front around Big Timber to
Harlowton. Alongside the breezy conditions in far eastern Montana,
there is also a slight chance of light precipitation (25 percent
or less) during the morning and early afternoon Monday. With
this, high resolution models indicate precipitation type will be a
rain/snow mix, with the chance of seeing freezing rain even lower
now (less than 10 percent in Fallon County) due winds mixing down
warmer temperatures aloft. Arends

.DISCUSSION...

Rest of Today through Saturday...

The favorable pressure gradient for the Livingston/Nye areas has
largely hung on through the morning and into this afternoon. Winds
continue to gust in the 40s to mid 50s mph at both locations.
Expect a slight decrease ahead of tonights disturbance, when winds
will ramp up again in the range of 40-55 mph. The chance for
gusts of 60 mph or greater is 20-50%. As the upper shortwave
tracks across northern MT, a surface trough will dive through the
east, shifting the favorable gradient for Livingston/Nye to the
US-191 corridor. With increasing 700mb winds (40-55 knots) and
modest descent, gusts in the 40s and mid 50s mph are forecast from
Big Timber through Harlowton. The probability of gusts of 60 mph
or greater is 30-50%. The most likely timing of the strongest
gusts will be late tonight through sunrise.

Gusty winds will spread across the plains as the system continues
eastward, bringing gusts in the 30s and 40s mph. There is a low
chance for mixed precipitation along the Dakotas Monday evening
and into early Tuesday. The main concern will be a rain/snow mix,
though there is a low chance (10%) some brief freezing rain. Total
rain accumulations of a few hundredths of an inch and a dusting
of snow are forecast. Remain alert into Tuesday morning as low
temperatures are forecast to be in the 20s and any precip
accumulations may cause roads to become slick.

Another weak upper disturbance is shown moving through Tuesday,
this looks to bring breezy winds across southern MT and northern
WY, with gusts in the 20s and 30s mph. Additionally, a low to
moderate chance for precipitation is forecast for all mountains,
especially W-NW facing slopes. The Bighorn mountains look to be
most favored, with up to an inch forecast.

High temperatures through the week are forecast to be in the 40s
to low 60s. Temperatures will be warmest on Thursday, with highs
in the mid 60sF. Most models and ensembles are consistent in
showing temperatures in the mid 60s on Thursday, though several
outlying models are disproportionately increasing the probability
for temperatures of reaching 70F.

Last but not least, due to the persistent dry, occasionally
breezy, and very warm conditions, there is an elevated risk for
grass fires this week. Be careful to not cause a spark. Matos

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions will prevail tonight. Over the western foothills
(KLVM, K6S0, and K3HT), look for gusty to strong winds to continue
through Monday morning with gusts to 50 knots possible (moderate
chance) along a cold front passage early Monday morning. Over the
plains, occasional gusty winds will occur tonight, but where winds
remain calm, low level wind shear will exist with west to
northwesterly winds of 40 to 50 knots just off the surface. While
the strongest winds aloft will decrease through the morning
Monday, gusty winds look to mix down across the plains, resulting
in another breezy day. Along with the wind, airfields around and
eastward of KMLS could see scattered rain/snow in the morning and
early afternoon with MVFR conditions possible (moderate to high
chance, greatest near KBHK). Arends
